Selected in 2008 by the magazine Diapason to represent the French cello, with a dozen colleagues of his generation, Alexis Descharmes is an active ambassador of many repertoires for cello.
Born in 1977, trained at the Conservatoire de Paris in the classes of Michel Strauss and Philippe Muller, he is laureate of the Valentino Bucchi (1997) and Avant-Scènes (1999) competitions and receives successively the support of various foundations (Fondation Jean Brizard, Fonds Instrumental Francais, Meyer Foundation, Musical Mécénat Societe Generale and Fondation Natexis). Since 1998, he has been part of the Ensemble Court-Circuit, where he is involved alongside his artistic director Philippe Hurel. In addition, for the past ten years, he has collaborated regularly with IRCAM and Ensemble Intercontemporain.
Since 2006, Alexis Descharmes has joined the orchestra of the Opéra national de Paris, and continues in parallel a sustained activity in the current repertoire. He is the dedicatee of about fifty contemporary works, concertantes or soloists (Hurel, Saariaho, Fedele, Mantovani, Reynolds, Durieux, Matalon, Fujikura, Nillni …).
Alexis Descharmes has to his credit about twenty recordings (Deutsche Grammophon, accord, naive, æon, assai, Intrada, Fontec …), solo or with the sets mentioned above, with which he has performed in many festivals, in some thirty countries. Since 2004, he has recorded for the æon label, including the cello work of Kaija Saariaho (Télérama ffff, Coup de Coeur of the Charles Cros Academy), the work for cello by Franz Liszt (Diapason d’Or de 2007), a selection of Schubert’s Lieder, with his faithful partner Sébastien Vichard, and more recently a disc devoted to the work for cello by Klaus Huber, who received the Grand Prix of the academy Charles Cros.

He has worked with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Alternance and Ensemble Court-circuit and collaborates regularly with IRCAM.
Dedicatee of some fifty contemporary works, concertante and solo alike (Durieux, Fedele, Francesconi, Hervé, Hurel, Imai, Lanza, Levy, Mantovani, Matalon, Nillni, Pesson, Posadas, Reynolds, Saariaho, Schoeller, Solbiati, Stroppa…), Alexis Descharmes’s discography consists of some twenty recordings, in solo or with the aforementioned ensembles with which he has appeared at numerous festivals in some thirty countries. Since 2004 he records for the æon label, which has released the works for cello by Kaija Saariaho (‘ffff’ from Télérama, ‘Favourite’ of the Académie Charles Cros) and Franz Liszt (Diapason d’Or of the Year, 2007) and Schubert and Klaus Huber anthologies with his faithful partner Sébastien Vichard.
Alexis Descharmes joined the Orchestra of the Paris National Opera in 2006.
