The Gmem, founded in 1972 in Marseille by the composer Georges Bœuf, is labeled National Center for Musical Creation since 1997. Its missions are defined in specifications of the Ministry of Culture and Communication and are based on the production of creation music, broadcasting, transmission and research.
The music of creation covers a surprisingly vast field: vocal, electroacoustic or mixed (combining acoustic, electronic and / or computer-based lutheries). They explore new languages and experiment with processes. Music is intrinsically linked to multidisciplinarity (theater, dance, visual arts, cinema …) which adds to its richness. The diversity of devices and venues (concert hall, museum, gardens and parks …) also contributes to its originality.
PRODUCTION / CREATION / RESEARCH
The Gmem supports the writing of new works and accompanies their realization. A production unit endeavors to consider each project according to its objectives, assess the technical and administrative needs, as well as the dissemination prospects.
The residencies of composers, artists and performers make it possible to follow the evolution of the projects. Artists find at the Gmem, with reception areas, composition and rehearsal studios, led by a competent team, a place of support and advice to make their project a reality.
Each creation (order, composer’s residency) is the occasion for new developments in computer music, research in computer-made violin making, and the creation of more relevant interfaces for interpretation. The Gmem thus participates in the development of composition assistance tools, in particular with the permanent improvement of the editing and spatialization software (Holophon), and collaborates on work on signal processing and sound synthesis.
With the “Festival les musiques”, the Gmem strives to draw each spring, and since 1987, a panorama of contemporary music creation. Twenty events, concerts, installations, screenings, meetings, recitals, in a dozen places present to the public many creations mixed with an inventive exploration of recent repertoire.
Since 2012, “Reevox”, end of January, beginning of February, offers a path dedicated to music and electronic arts, and supports experimental projects by presenting, before their final form, different stages of development of the works hosted in the studio.
In addition to these two highlights, the Gmem co-produces in season with its partners, cycles of performances (voice and electronics with the Opera de Marseille, text and music with the Gaston-Defferre Departmental Library), and partners with Musicatreize to support the whole C. Barré and make live the “Musicatreize room”.
From local to international, the Gmem extends its influence by contributing to the European Academy of Music of the Lyric Art Festival of Aix-en-Provence, the Controtempo Festival of the Villa Medici in Rome, Opus XXI of the Franco-German Academy of Contemporary Music as well as participating in the production of international productions.
TRANSMISSION / TRAINING / PEDAGOGY
Each event is an opportunity to reflect on forms of transmission and pedagogical tools.
For schools and high schools, the Gmem develops adapted “educational pathways” offers (creative workshops, visits, meetings, concerts with commentary). Thus a privileged relationship with schools is built, which favors a sensitive approach to contemporary music.
The Gmem welcomes in its studios the electroacoustic composition class of the National Conservatory of Regional Radiation of Marseille and weaves close links with the University of Provence, Cefedem-South, the CFMI, the Ingémédia Institute of Toulon University Var, with the aim of promoting exchanges between professional, technical, scientific and artistic circles (professional training, workshops, workshops, conferences, accompaniment of young composers).
“If the essential mission of the Gmem is the production of musical creation, its social function is to transmit what this production of the imaginary induces as emancipation of man. Our ambition is to make our area of expertise a place of discovery where knowledge, the pleasure of learning and emotion are articulated. Christian Sebille – Director
