How do these nine musicians succeed, like a string quartet, in playing without a leader the most virtuosic ensemble passages, even in the most intense crowd, offering audiences an exciting chamber music, full of of passion and precision in nuances?
L’Instant Donné is a singular instrumental ensemble. Dedicated to the interpretation of today’s largely unsupervised chamber music, it has been operating since 2002 in a collegiate manner. If the geometry of the group varies according to the works played, the performers are fixed: nine musicians members (flute, oboe, clarinet, harp, piano, percussion, violin, viola, cello), which does not prevent to regularly host guests (the voices of Marion Tassou and Natalie Raybould, vocal ensemble EXAUDI).
Installed in his working studio in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis) at the gates of Paris, the ensemble is distinguished by a very specific approach to interpretation, part of a radical practice and a commitment without fault of its musicians, which goes through the careful study and overall apprehension of the score (no longer simply separate parts as it is customary but also the conductor, the score normally intended for the conductor: without a leader, it is indispensable to know not only one’s own part but also the parts of others). The result is great intensity in mutual listening, attention to each other at all times, deep connivance.
Far from any dogmatism, this choice is, for L’Instant Donné, the best way to keep the ear and the eye constantly on the lookout to transmit with passion living interpretations, chiselled and sharpened. Playing without direction also creates a great proximity with the public: the contact is direct and fluid, without intermediary. Here we come back to the source of chamber music, as with a quartet or even a jazz band.
The repertoire extends from the end of the 19th century to the present day (from Webern to Lachenmann, from Ravel to Feldman …), following the inspiration of incursions into earlier eras (Baroque, Classical, Romantic …). However, the program is mainly devoted to the composers of today with whom the ensemble collaborates closely (monographic concerts dedicated to Frédéric Pattar, Stefano Gervasoni, Gerard Pesson, Johannes Schöllhorn, Clemens Gadenstätter among others …).
Over the years, L’Instant Donné has established itself as a reference for the chamber music of our time, a group with original and modern operation, a privileged creation tool.
L’Instant Donné is the guest of many French and foreign festivals as well as first-class venues (Autumn Festival in Paris, Agora-IRCAM – Paris, Musica – Strasbourg, Wittener Tage – Witten, Germany, Musikprotokoll – Graz, Austria, Manchester International Festival – United Kingdom), Opera of Lille or Montpellier, Philharmonie de Luxembourg, etc. The ensemble performs regularly abroad in Europe and throughout the world (Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Morocco, South Africa, etc.). Since 2005, the ensemble is regularly welcomed by the theater L’Échangeur in Bagnolet for many creations.
In 2015, L’Instant Donné is “associated company” at the Garonne Theater (Toulouse) with the support of ONDA and receives the support of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Ile de France – Ministry of Culture under assistance to the conventioned ensembles, SACEM, culture with private copying, SPEDIDAM, the Coupleux-Lassalle Foundation, Impuls neue Musik – Franco-German Fund for Contemporary Music, ADAMI and FCM.
