Mario Caroli was born in Italy in 1974. He studied with Annamaria Morini and was deeply influenced by Manuela Wiesler. At the age of 22 he won the coveted “Kranichsteiner Musikpreis” in Darmstadt.
Since then he has pursued a career as a successful solo flutist. The design of the programs and the extent of its repertoire draw a rich and complex musical personality. Moving with great naturalness from contemporary music to ancient music, he refuses specialization and shatters the clichés attached to his instrument.This passionate philosopher has become the favorite soloist of the greatest composers of today.Very known for sifting through the repertoire and for his daring excursions in the most extreme pages of literature, many new compositions for flute are entrusted and dedicated by Dillon, Fedele, Ferneyhough, Gervasoni, Hosokawa, Kurtag, Jolas, Mantovani, Saariaho, Stroppa, Yuasa. Among them, Sciarrino with whom he has developed a very privileged relationship. He performs with the world’s leading orchestras (Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Lincoln Center in New York, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, etc.). the direction of the greatest chefs (Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, Hiroshi Wakasugi …).
His extensive discography includes several monographs devoted to the flute and is regularly broadcast by the most important Radios. His recordings of Jolivet and Sciarrino have won the most important accolades from international critics: “Recommended” (Repertory), “Charles Cros Academy Coup de Coeur”, “A! In addition to his solo activity, Mario Caroli has worked many times as a stage performer with Trisha Brown’s dance company. He regularly visits schools, factories, hospitals, retirement homes and even prisons, with the aim of relieving people in difficulty through the joys of music.
Mario Caroli teaches in the advanced courses of the Conservatoire National de Strasbourg, where he lives, and he gives master-classes throughout the world.
