Wang Ying-chieh is unquestionably one of the most famous Erhu players of her generation. Her repertoire includes traditional classical works and contemporary works, as well as a mix of both genres (crossover). She has been Principal Erhu of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, and has performed with, among others, the National Taiwan Chinese Orchestra, the Taipei-Zanying Chinese Orchestra, the Kinmen Chinese Orchestra and the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. She has played with many conductors such as Gabriel Mattei, Mikael Celda Gonzalez, Wen-Pin Chien among others and collaborated with many composers including Sue-Ya Wang, Che-Yi Lee, Juan Camilo Hernandez Sanchez and Lin-Ni Liao. She is also Professor of Erhu at the National Taiwan University of Arts and the University of Taipei. Born in Taipei, Ying-chieh begins her musical initiation from an early age with learning piano, violin and composition. starts the erhu at 8 years old. In 2002, she obtained her master’s degree in erhu practice under the direction of Professor Yum-Tin Lin, at the Institute of Advanced Art Studies of the Chinese Culture University of Taiwan, becoming the first student to obtain this master’s degree in Taiwan. During her studies at this institute, she began her solo career at the National Recital Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. She has been invited to numerous festivals as a soloist in Taiwan and abroad. From 2011 to 2015, his collaborations were held with the Regensburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany), the MAS Festival (Contemporary Music in Scène) in Paris and Lyon, the Shanghai International Festival of Arts, the Festival Traditional Arts of Taipei and participated in the Golden Melody Awards for music and traditional arts (equivalent to Taiwan’s Victoires de la Musique). She has also given several master classes at the Conservatoire de Blanc-Mesnil and at the Conservatoire de Vitry. Ying-chieh will collaborate with the Taiwan Music Institute and TPMC in 2016 and 2017 with a new series of creations and will be touring Taiwan and Europe. She will also participate in the PAN transnational reproduction program and will offer a series of concerts, workshops and recordings with Japanese, Korean and American musicians.
