Calvario

CALVARIO

22′ – 2008
solo music

Zad Moultaka was inspired to write this piece of the Via Crucis, the fourteen Stations of the Way of the Cross, Calvary of Christ. Far from the pathetic images, it is the three falls of Christ during his Passion that have affected the composer. At each fall, the guitarist changes the chord of the guitar. This process pulls the instrument towards another musical, another oriental universe. “The desire to write a great piece for guitar was stimulated by meeting with Pablo Màrquez, by my total ignorance of the instrument, and by the theme of the fourteen stations of the Calvary of Christ at the same time, which was imposed on me with a lot of insistence.
What first challenged me in the Stations of the Cross were the three moments that represent the “fall” of Christ. Due to the fact that in Islam, to get in touch with God, the dervish turns around himself and creates a horizontal circular movement, it suddenly appeared to me that in Christianity this quest is translated by the fact of falling and rising incessantly, creating a rather vertical circular motion. ”

The guitar offers a variety of timbres, temperaments, attacks, game modes, and possible connections with archaic instruments. The soundtrack is an entirely a material for a guitar, where the composer takes advantage of each parcel of the body instrument.
