La mélancolie du diable

LA MÉLANCOLIE DU DIABLE

10′ – 2012
solo music

The devil could be saved if he suddenly felt nostalgia on his initial state.
The fixed sounds that accompany the bagpipe Erwan Kerarvec are fragments mixed with music from Egypt, the Gulf, Turkey, Armenian melodies, Byzantine monodies … Whispers or fury, it is the soundtrack of the Mediterranean… old, modern, difficult to date, with a little light melody, heat… something in the air that can be recognized without precisely defining it.

The composer wanted to work with these archaic, popular, surviving energies in our contemporaneity, by contrasting them with a very old instrument, which had become noisy with the sound of wars. As if he had lost his own voice, forgot some sweetness and other sonic possibilities of his origin. He would fight, prolong the outer space moving, alive, would multiply to seek, conquer, even create his own inner song. Each one, from that voice constrained from the bagpipes to the sounds and murmurs of the world, keeping its own temporary pace, would be pawing a path to the other. A fusion of languages and the shock of otherness. (Catherine Peillon)
