Zad Moultaka is obsessed with lost worlds. A dull concern about the disappearance leaves him no break. This tension is reflected in great concentration and extreme power in his musical expression. Here, through a refined electroacoustic and videographic work, a studied lighting scenography with the help of five virtual singers, a tenor and two instrumentalists, an epic tale is created, a poetic mythology in a theatrical form.

The tale is inspired by the testimony of Sir Laurens Van der Post, South African explorer and philosopher, from his book The Lost World of Kalahari.

The composer pays tribute to an ancestral culture erased, the Bushmen world decimated by colonization and globalization since the late eighteenth century. By exploring their language with clicks, their imaginary, their poetry, he invites us to question our own world, our gestures and our relationship to nature. A back and forth work between presence and absence, play on the two movements of speech, on the two aspects of reality, the real and its simulacra: visions, shadows, echoes … We will not see any dancer on stage, the dance is a metaphor for the joy of the quest, announcing the upcoming of its spurt.

The instrumentalists, the singer become the true protagonists of the adventure. The decor, the sound and visual projections, the light, everything participates here in an art of metamorphosis.

NOTE OF INTENTION

“Something inexplicable pushed me with determination towards a nation I do not know much about. Is it the proximity of destiny I share with the Indians of America, pacifist people stabbed by greed and lust and whose memory haunts me for years? From Bushmen, I only know their language, and it is already wonderful and precious for a musician to have crossed it in his path.Today there are practically no living Bushmen with their customs and in their natural environment. They have been uprooted, cut off from their vital source and their ancestral wealth. Nevertheless, their dances and songs still exist. To question the energy of these men that could be ours, their connection with the soil and to the earth that should be ours, to reflect on the disappearance of a nation, a land, a civilization, this danger that we are all watching, whatever our belonging, this is the development of this project. A percussionist and a saxophonist would be the shadow of this strange language percussive and melodious at the same time, the shadow of a lost song, which seeks in our inner resonances. In search of a link, musicians and singers, with multiple faces, singing exposed or reflecting with masks, our own interpretation. Souls walking on the stage, wanders between the projection of the memory images and the absence.”
