Rebirth, Beirut Exhibition Center

From June 15, 2011, the Beirut Exhibition Center exhibits the work of 49 Lebanese artists, of all generations, around the theme “Rebirth” (Renewal). With what means and what ambitions do we organize such an event? The exhibition curator, Janine Maamari, takes us behind the scenes of the renewal of contemporary Lebanese art. To bring together dozens of artists of all stripes in the same exhibition hall, you have to find a theme that is at the same time unifying, inspiring and symbolic. With this in mind, Janine Maamari chose ‘Rebirth’, a concept which underlines the renewal of the Lebanese artistic scene, but it is also a concept rather rich in meaning and which allows different interpretations: ” ‘Rebirth’ is a chosen theme. after careful consideration, following conversations with the artists and my relatives. I think this is a notion that is part of the Lebanese identity and that has, for each of us, personal, social and historical connotations (the phoenix rising from its ashes, for example). But it’s also a pretty big idea that everyone interprets differently, ” she explains.

Finally, almost fifty artists – more than a third of whom are women – who are selected to exhibit a recent work or work produced especially for this event.

’Each artist interpreted the theme in their own vocabulary and technique. Artists could express themselves in the media of their choice – painting, sculpture, photography, installations, mixed media, videos … ’’, continues the curator. Funded mainly by Solidere and the Beirut Exhibition Center, the project is organized in collaboration with several art galleries in Beirut. If all the works will be for sale (through the artist), the purpose of the exhibition is above all to attract a new audience who is not necessarily used to going to the openings: ” We want to bring together people of all ages and for this purpose we will organize conferences and guided tours to explain contemporary art to young art lovers aged 7 to 15, ” says Janine Maamari. Beyond the Lebanese public, the exhibition is also intended to be a showcase of contemporary Lebanese art internationally: ” It is difficult to know what impact this event will have, but we have invited many foreign galleries, and we let’s plan to make the works travel, ”says the curator. ” We are at a pivotal moment, artists have more and more opportunities to exhibit their work in Beirut and they have never been so numerous to participate in biennials and contemporary art fairs abroad. . This event could open even more doors for them, ”she concludes.

A partir du 15 juin 2011, le Beirut Exhibition Center expose le travail de 49 artistes libanais, toutes générations confondues, autour du thème ’Rebirth’ (Renouveau). Avec quels moyens et quelles ambitions organise-t-on un tel événement ? La commissaire de l’exposition, Janine Maamari, nous fait entrer dans les coulisses du renouvellement de l’art contemporain libanais.

Pour réunir des dizaines d’artistes de tous bords dans une même salle d’exposition, il faut trouver une thématique à la fois fédératrice, inspirante et symbolique. Dans cette optique, Janine Maamari a choisi ’Rebirth’, un concept qui souligne le renouveau de la scène artistique libanaise, mais c’est aussi un concept assez riche de sens et qui permet différentes interprétations : ’’ ’Rebirth’ est un thème choisi après mûre réflexion, à la suite de conversations avec les artistes et mes proches. Je pense que c’est une notion qui fait partie de l’identité libanaise et qui a, pour chacun de nous, des connotations personnelles, sociales et historiques (le phœnix qui renait de ses cendres, par exemple). Mais c’est aussi une idée assez vaste que chacun interprète différemment’’, explique-t-elle.

Finalement, c’est presque une cinquantaine d’artistes – dont plus d’un tiers de femmes – qui sont sélectionnés pour exposer une œuvre récente ou réalisée spécialement pour cet événement. ’’Chaque artiste a interprété le thème dans son propre vocabulaire et sa technique. Les artistes pouvaient s’exprimer dans les médias de leur choix – peinture, sculpture, photographie, installations, techniques mixtes, vidéos…’’, continue la commissaire.

Financé principalement par Solidere et le Beirut Exhibition Center, le projet s’organise en collaboration avec plusieurs galeries d’art beyrouthines. Si toutes les œuvres seront à vendre (par l’intermédiaire de l’artiste), la vocation de l’exposition est surtout d’attirer un nouveau public qui n’a pas forcément l’habitude de se rendre aux vernissages : ’’Nous souhaitons réunir des personnes de tout âge et nous organiserons dans ce but des conférences et des visites guidées pour expliquer l’art contemporain aux jeunes amateurs de 7 à 15 ans’’, précise Janine Maamari.

Au-delà du public libanais, l’exposition se veut aussi une vitrine de l’art contemporain libanais à l’international : ’’Il est difficile de savoir quelle portée aura cet événement, mais nous avons invité de nombreuses galeries étrangères, et nous comptons faire voyager les œuvres », précise la commissaire. ’’Nous sommes à un moment charnière, les artistes ont de plus en plus d’opportunités d’exposer leur travail à Beyrouth et ils n’ont jamais été aussi nombreux à participer aux biennales et aux foires d’art contemporain à l’étranger. Cet événement pourrait leur ouvrir encore d’autres portes’’, conclut-elle.
