- Zad Moultaka has been pursuing for several years a personal research on plastic and musical language. In his work as a composer, he integrates the fundamental data of Western contemporary writing – structures, trends, families and signs – with the specific characteristics of Arabic music – monody, heterophony, modality, rhythms, vocality …
This research touches on many areas of experimentation …
The slow maturation of a very personal form of expression gave birth, from 2003, to a series of works whose production has gradually been amplified. From choral music to ensemble music, from chamber music to solo vocal music, from opera, electroacoustics, film music to sound installations and choreography …
Zad Moultaka has started a musical collaboration with many artists around the world, including 2e2m, Ars Nova, Sillages, Accroche note, Musicatreize, L’Instant Donné, the Netherland Radio Choir, the Schönberg Ensemble of Amsterdam, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne de Montreal, the Neue Vocalsolisten of Stuttgart, the Chamber Choir Les Elements, the National Orchestra of Lorraine.
- He created the Mezwej ensemble in 2004, a project based on an approach, a state of mind of experimentation, research and creation through a questioning of Eastern and Western cultures, specific tension and friction between writing and orality. Three years in residence at the Foundation Royaumont, between 2007 and 2009, Mezwej began several seasons between Beirut, Paris, Marseille and Greece from 2016.
- At the same time, his work as a painter has intensified since 2011. More and more daring, it is emerging in Beirut, Abu Dhabi, Paris and Venice.
He has a complex personality that drives him to tirelessly decipher the enigmas and resistances that arise in him, questioning history, memory, the contemporary world; exploring limits, dreams, with this sense of urgency peculiar to creators . The same concern and urgency drive him in his quest for a contemporary and uncompromising expression.
