L’Autre rive

L’AUTRE RIVE

60′ – 2009
for choir

Under the bombings, the child asks, “What if I was born on the other side? This question overflows and obsesses. Two twin worlds live closed to each other, drunk with hatred and violence. L’Autre Rive experiences the footprints of separation and even older fractures. The piece unfolds simultaneously in two spaces.
Creating a kind of ritual, the singers leave one after another the first place to go to the second one. They pass on the “other side” where the same coin is rolled upside down. In mirror, false mirror, since the instruments and the languages differ. The music follows the form of the text: from the bellicose energy of the group to the extreme loneliness and the disappearance of the individual. A catharsis. From exhortation to war, to sacrifice and its excesses, to the feeling of self-destruction and obliteration … or the opposite.

During the intermission, the audience changes rooms and lives again the opposite experience. The same ? In any case strangely close and disturbing.

L’Autre Rive ends the cycle of a three-year residency (2007-2009) at the Royaumont Foundation. Zad Moultaka was able to question oriental and western musical cultures, specific tensions, energy, friction between writing and orality throughout the Mezwej ensemble bringing together musicians, singers and dancers from both shores.
L’Autre Rive is the result of an exemplary co-production between the Royaumont Foundation, the vocal ensemble Musicatreize, the National Center for Scripture in the Chartreuse de Villeneuve-Lez-Avignon, and the Noirlac Abbey (Centres culturels de rencontre). with the support of the Art Moderne Artistic Development Agency.
